(Summary blog only.   Last full blog was Day 0368).

Well – it was onwards and eastwards again today. We had a brief overnight stay at the Los Angeles airport Hyatt hotel – ok but nothing special – then we were down in the lobby waiting for the shuttle bus to the terminal by 9am.

I think the whole of LA suffers from a traffic problem and the airport is no exception. Even though you can see the Air Canada terminal from the hotel, there are at least two eight lanes motorways between the two, so it’s impossible to walk. And the shuttle, immediately embedded in the jam, took a good half hour to battle its way to the terminal.

Anyway, eventually we made it and were swiftly through immigration and security and waiting – hours early as usual – at the departure gate.

One of the things about this trip is that we have broken it up into a series of relatively short (5-7 hour) flights, rather than trying to do the whole thing in just a couple of long hops. I’m not totally sure this is the best way to do it but this approach does have the advantage of meaning you’re not stuck on any of the planes for too long, and the time differences aren’t so great. As a result, at about five and a half hours and three time zones, todays flight to Montreal was an almost exact re-run of yesterday’s leg from Hawaii.

The flight itself was totally unremarkable – left on time and arrived on time, and then a relatively swift transit through immigration in Montreal. We managed to find the no. 747 bus to take us downtown and we were in our hotel – the Sofitel – in about 45 minutes from landing. The hotel is fine if unspectacular and we went out for dinner at the nearby Deville Diner. A very tasty salad with accompanying beers was duly served up and enjoyed although we were sitting right next to the resident DJ so it was very loud. We were however a bit short on dining options as we lost three hours in time difference from LA so it was almost 10pm before we set out to find somewhere to eat.

Exploration proper starts tomorrow – provided we don’t oversleep!

Full of the joys of spring as we prepare to leave LA Terminal 6, Los Angeles Airport (LAX)
Good to go.   Need to get used to being bilingual again Montreal airport 5½ hours later.   It’s been raining and it’s cool – great transition weather back to Ireland!
