Ireland day 0736. Wednesday 04 October 2023- Clearing day 4
Commentary
(Summary blog only. Last full blog was Day 0368).
We are getting towards the closing stages of our mammoth house clearance operation. Today was spent mostly in the study and the spare bedroom – notorious backwaters where papers and miscellaneous items of computer hardware settle out from the current of life.
So we spent a lot of time going through bank statements from 1986, deciding that we didn’t want them, and committing them to the shredder. It was quite tough having to make a million endless decisions about the fate of our beloved documents, but very cathartic when it was all done. Perhaps most time consuming and difficult was checking all the memory cards, USB drives and hard disks that we had accumulated, and ensuring that there were no valuable or confidential files on them. In the end, I must admit, for some of the trickier items like old hard drives, or redundant laptops, I ended up just putting a hammer through them and consigning them to the electrical waste.
A couple of friends and neighbours came round during the day to offer new homes to some of our surplus belongings – and it was great to see things going to locations where they are wanted and will be used.
Tomorrow, the removals people come and start taking our things away to their various new destinations. But now, as we’ve just come to the end of another eleven hour stint, we are going to call it a day and treat ourselves to dinner at Pizza Express. Time to relax, briefly.
