Ireland day 0473. Saturday 14 January 2023- Marmalade4
Today’s summary Val was travelling to Austria and I spent the day doing paperwork, making more marmalade, and making a loaf of bread.   All good, except the marmalade didn’t set very well.
Today’s weather Cool and blowy all day, with some sun.  Showery rain in the afternoon.  Strong westerly wind.   Appx 6C

(Summary blog only.   Last full blog was Day 0368).

Val away all day in the UK  en route to Austria.   I spent the day mostly in the flat though briefly went to the dentist at lunchtime just to check that the root canal treatment I had before Christmas had actually worked.  Verdict was very positive – all good and infection cleared up.

In the remaining time, I did yet more paperwork (tax of course) and then processed another kilo of Sevilles into marmalade.   Despite altering all the variables I could think of, I’m still not getting a good set.   Perhaps the fruit just don’t have much pectin?  I also made some mixed seed bread (from a packet, from Tesco)), and it turned out very well.  In the evening, while the dough was rising, I took a walk in the drizzle up to the Broadmeadow lagoon and back along the shore.   Very invigorating!

So despite the slight disappointment with the marmalade, overall I’d rate the day as a success.

Steps up from Killeen Park to the path leading alongside the Gaybrook Stream to Seabury Drive The fourth batch.   Looks ok but despite an extra-long boil, it still isn’t setting properly
Bread dough as kneaded 90 minutes later.   Saccharomyces cerevisiae at work!
Broadmeadow lagoon shoreline this evening.   The herons just sit there, feet in the water, apparently oblivious to the cold
