Commentary
I had all sorts of plans for today, but in the end, in view of Val’s somewhat delicate state at the moment and the poor weather, I ended up doing much less than I had expected.
Val, by the way, is doing well today though understandably somewhat shell-shocked by the unexpected and sudden dental extraction yesterday. So she elected to spend most of the day in the flat, catching up on Christmas cards and generally taking things easy. Though we did manage a short walk to the shops together in the evening.
I also had a pretty quiet day. In the morning, I headed out into the demesne, intending to go on to make it a longer walk to the coast and back. But soon after I set out, it started raining so I decided to cut my losses and make my way back into town instead. I needed to pick up some stamps for the cards, so I made the best of it and made the Post Office my main destination instead of the beach.
After a light lunch of soup and toast, I dialled into a video call with my friend in Houston, and we spent a good hour discussing the challenges of the world. Good for keeping the neurones active.
Afterwards, by this stage I was expecting to take the train into Dublin for an evening lecture. It’s about the Irish Natural History Museum and is organised by the Irish Geological Association. But the dreary weather and the prospect of a tedious cold slow late-night journey back to Malahide afterwards rather put me off. So I took the “soft” option and decided to dial in by Zoom instead.
And that brings the day to a close. I’m going to log off now and resume my nursing duties. Even if that just means heating up a tin of baked beans!
