Ireland day 0489. Monday 30 January 2023- Fish
Commentary
(Summary blog only. Last full blog was Day 0368).
Val was at work in the afternoon, and I was tasked with changing our diets. We both felt we’ve been eating too many biscuits and scones(!) lately so need to improve our food intake before we turn into spotty blobs. So I decided to cook some fish (well Val decided for me) – which, to my shame, is something I’ve never done before – aside from the occasional fish-finger or boil in the bag salmon.
So I actually went into a fishmonger – which was in itself something of a feat as I’d never been in one actually to buy anything before – and bought some cod. The fishmonger seemed to recognise my plight so de-boned it without me even asking, and I have to admit it actually looked quite edible by the time he’d finished. Though it wasn’t cheap – at €8 for the two fillets, it definitely falls into the “special treat” category. You can see it in the banner image at the top.
So I spent the rest of the afternoon figuring out what to do with it – and what to make to eat with it. In the end I decided to bake it with lemon and thyme, and then make some Moroccan chickpea soup and a salad as an accompaniment. We ate as soon as Val got back from work and actually the whole process, although alarmingly complicated and last minute, went well and the fish and soup tasted good.
So I’d rate today’s culinary exploits as a success, the main challenge I face now is repeating the process every day for the rest of my life. Hmmm. Let’s see.
