Ireland day 1408. Wednesday 06 August 2025- Getting Back
Today’s summary A quiet day trying to get over the worst of Covid. Managed to get out of bed at a reasonable hour and to enjoy a decent brunch. Went on a short walk with Val (at arms length) round the Marina in the afternoon. Spent much of the rest of the day reading a cycling travelogue book then enjoyed another salad for tea. Hoping to watch James Bond in “Spectre” in the evening.
Today’s weather Overcast but dry. Light westerly wind. Appx 19c

Commentary

It’s been a bit of an intermediate sort of a day today, to be honest. But I think I am starting the recovery from Covid now, as the coughing has eased quite a lot and I actually managed to get a few hours sleep last night. But last time I had this virus, I was testing positive for 15 days, so I’m not expecting to get better overnight.

I also managed to ring the changes a little by getting up before noon and enjoying a delicious poached egg on toast and an almond croissant that Val had bought me for brunch. It made a change from the jelly and ice cubes, which had been the staple of my diet for a lot of yesterday.

After having something to eat, we ventured outdoors and went on a short walk to the Marina. I managed to persuade Val to stay at arm’s length from me, as I am really keen for her not to get this pestilence. She dropped into the supermarket while we were on our sojourn, while I waited outside.

I’ve also started reading a good travel book that one of my friends lent me a couple of weeks ago. It’s entitled simply “A bike ride” and it’s about a woman (Anne Mustoe), a bit younger than I am now, who in the mid-1980s packed in her job as a head teacher and decided to cycle round the world. An entertaining narrative about an epic undertaking.

I’m running out of steam now, so I’m going to put my feet up for a bit before dinner. We’re having chicken and salmon salad again, which is perfect. Light, tasty and nutritious. Then later, energy levels permitting, we’re going to watch “Spectre” – the latest in our current plan to catch up on James Bond films that we haven’t seen for a while. Always fun and easy viewing – just what’s needed at the moment, I think.

The tide in the Broadmeadow lagoon was exceptionally low today.   That fits with my theory of how the water level in the lagoon works.   The moon is currently waxing gibbous, a few days after first quarter, which is when the neap tides should have allowed the lagoon to drain to its maximum extent A pair of teacake-like fungi seemingly thriving up by the back entrance to our apartment block.   According to Google, they are probably Cracked-Cap Boletes (Boletus chrysenteron), which is relatively common in Ireland.   It is “edible” though apparently not highly prized.   As far as I am concerned, that is code for “avoid”
My current loaned reading material.   Good fun.   Thanks Garry!
