Ireland day 1243. Saturday 22 February 2025- Fuerteventura Day 12

Ireland day 1243. Saturday 22 February 2025- Fuerteventura Day 12
Today’s summary A totally lazy day in the hotel mostly spent relaxing in the sun, swimming in the pool, and doing my Spanish homework. Walked to the supermarket in the late afternoon to get some essentials then ate in the a la carte restaurant again in the evening.   Finished the day with a film streamed from the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival
Today’s weather Warm dry and sunny. Light northerly wind. Appx 22c

Commentary

We promised ourselves a bit of “R&R” once we finished our long walk yesterday. So today we spent most of the time “R” ing and “R” ing. We did manage to stick to our new diurnal rhythm, though, and got into breakfast well before 9am. A phenomenon which is more or less completely unheard of for us when we are on holiday.

But the greater part of the day was spent by the pool. Either swimming (though only briefly as the water is cold!) or blobbing around like sealions in the sun. But mostly – in my case – by doing my latest Spanish deberes, and – in Val’s case – by catching up on her Le Carre novel.

I was quite surprised exactly how fast the time passes when you’re not doing anything in particular. It was very enjoyable for a change, though I could see myself lapsing into systemic indolence if I did it every day. The deberes did keep me fully engaged for quite a while though. It was surprisingly difficult and having been immersed in a Spanish speaking island for the last eleven days sadly didn’t seem to make it any easier.

Later in the afternoon, after we had sunned, swimmed and spanished as much as we could, we decamped down to the supermarket in town to pick up a few provisions. Then, once again, we enjoyed a pretty decent a la carte dinner in the restaurant.   Finally, we rounded off the evening by watching an expedition film from the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival, which I was gifted for Christmas (thanks Rob!)

All thoroughly relaxing and just what we both needed!

The slightly uninspiring shopping centre below our hotel in Morro Jable Much more inspiring mixed red and purple Bougainvilleas in the hotel gardens. I really feel at home when there are bougainvilleas about!

This rather magnificent Striped Hawk-Moth (Hyles livornica) landed on the terrace outside our room this morning.   It was about 3-4cm long.   I don’t think I’ve ever seen one before, but apparently they are reasonably common in this part of the world
