Commentary

Our friends were having a day off historical investigations today, so after a fairly leisurely breakfast, we headed off together to Malahide to catch the 102 south. Our destination today was Sutton, and after a bit of careful checking of the tides, I established that we would be able to walk round the coast to Howth via the Burrow beach.

So once we had been deposited by the bus outside Sutton station, we made our way across the mud-flats, round the golf club headland and onto the beach.

We had almost the whole place to ourselves today. Big skies and lots of space. So it was a thoroughly fun enjoyable walk along the sand. We arrived in Howth after about an hour and had a good look round the harbour, walking right out to the new lighthouse.

On completion of our sojourn, we dropped into Beshoffs for a seafood lunch (the fish pie and the fish and chips were excellent, especially with a good Sauvignon Blanc). Then after lunch we took a quick look at the seal milling around the fishing boats, we caught a DART then the 102, again, and made it back to Malahide just before 5pm.   By this time, the blue skies had become a thing of the past and a thick cold clammy sea mist had stolen in, enshrouding everything in its chilly embrace

Once back at the flat, given that we’d all just eaten we didn’t feel like a heavyweight dinner was needed, we just enjoyed some of the pork casserole I made last week, with a good glass of Rioja to accompany it. An unusually alcoholic day!

We didn’t have any further plans for the evening, so downloaded the Clint Eastwood classic “Outlaw Josie Wales” from Amazon and spent a thoroughly enjoyable couple of hours recalling the summer of 1976.

So all in all a very pleasant and low-stress day with our friends.
