Commentary
A few weeks ago, our dishwasher started getting very smelly, gobbling up salt, and depositing a hazy white film (which I think was probably the salt that it was consuming) all over our crockery. So, falling back on one of the major advantages of renting rather than owning a properly, Val contacted the property management company about it.
Rather than messing about trying to diagnose the problem and then – more likely than not unsuccessfully – trying to fix it, they simply agreed to take the old one away and replace it. The replacement was scheduled for between 1 and 3 pm today, which was a bit inconvenient as it broke up the day. But we didn’t have any other plans, so it wasn’t really a problem.
While we were waiting, we passed the day relatively productively but un-stressfully. Once we were up and about, we decided to go on our usual saunter round the demesne – which was quiet and redolently autumnal this morning, after the heavy rain last night. After we were back, we had a light lunch of chicken and sandwiches, then gave the flat a bit of a spring clean – hoovering, cleaning and generally letting some fresh air in. At this point, at 3 o’clock on the dot, the engineers duly arrived complete with new dishwasher on a trolley. They quickly and efficiently removed the old one, put the new one in, and tested it. So far it seems to be working well, which is a great relief as I really don’t like washing up by hand.
Val also decided to have a look at our bird feeder. After we initially installed it, there was a huge flurry of avian activity but in the last week or so, the birds have stopped coming even though the feeder wasn’t empty. On closer inspection, it turned out that the birdseed had got wet and turned to porridge, which clearly wasn’t to our feathered friends’ taste. So we cleaned it out, then Val refilled it with fresh dry seeds, and within literally half a minute it had attracted an excited flock of hungry bluetits. Very cheering.
Once we had done our bit for hygiene – both in the flat and in the bird feeder, we took ourselves quickly down Hanlon’s Lane and round the marina, before getting read for night classes – Spanish for me and Pilates for Val. And on that note now I better sign off and start going through my deberes. I need to have at least a vague idea what I am talking about or I shall be bottom of the class, again!
