Ireland day 0545. Monday 27 March 2023- Maintenance
Today’s summary Val was at work so while she was away I had a video consultation with my hip physio first thing – who said I could start swimming again.   Then an engineer came to fix a few broken bits in the flat, and I made some bread.  Walked round the demesne last thing before Val got back
Today’s weather Crisp clear and frosty first thing, then stayed dry and bright most of the day.   Light south-easterly wind.   Appx 8C

(Summary blog only.   Last full blog was Day 0368).

One of the joys of living in a rented flat is that if anything goes wrong, the landlord – not me – has to fix it.   So this morning while Val was at work, an engineer came to fix a door handle that wasn’t working, and also to change a couple of failed lightbulbs.   I could easily have done these things myself, but it would have taken time and cost money.   As it was, it took him five minutes and cost me nothing.

But before the engineer came, I’d already had a video consultation with my hip-recovery physiotherapist.  She’s given me some more strength building exercises (they are pretty hard actually) and – most excitingly – after having had a look at my scar declared that I can start going to the swimming pool again (walking and front crawl only) and can use the exercise bike at the gym.  I’m really pleased that she thinks I’m progressing well enough to do these things, and hope to start in the next day or two.

Once the consultation was finished and the engineer had been, I decided to try making some bread – but this time from raw materials (flour, water and yeast) rather than a packet mix.   It actually turned out quite well – though I think I should have put more salt in (I only used 5g for 500g of flour) and also let it prove for a bit longer after knocking it back – as it was a bit dense.   Still, I think it’s looking promising and will try and remedy these aspects next time.

Finally, all the domestics were eventually completed, so I headed off for a quick trot (that was actually a slow hobble on crutches) round the demesne, with a short trip to the shops added on at the end.   Now it’s time for tea – I think we will try out sardines on toast – using the newly minted bread, of course.

First violet I’ve seen so far this year.   Growing under a seat at the far end of the demesne Succulents thriving outdoors in one of the flowerbeds outside a south-facing cottage on the Bawn.   Last summer, they flowered spectacularly
